Convicts serving life sentences with no chance of parole are offered a tantalising deal: a chance at freedom if they agree to take part in a deep space mission to extract energy from a black hole. Among the prisoners who agree to the unusual deal is a celibate murderer called Monte. The inmates are unaware that they are guinea pigs in an experiment in social and sexual engineering orchestrated by the ship’s medic, Dr Dibs. She hopes to create a child through artificial insemination.
