The Babyshambles frontman played in tribute to 16-year-old Daniel Squires, who formed a friendship with the rocker after being diagnosed with bone cancer.

Pete spent time with the teenager’s family before taking to the stage and performing an emotional tribute alongside one of Daniel’s friends. The wake was held at a pub in South Tyneside, North England.

Pub manager Lynette Gale said: “He said he wanted to come up as a tribute and it’s such a lovely gesture. It was special. It went very well, there were a lot of people here. He was on the stage at the back of the pub and everyone was crowding around him.”

Daniel had originally drawn up a list of stars he wanted to meet after he was diagnosed with bone cancer.

After his first meeting with Pete, Daniel said: “Pete and the band have just been absolutely amazing and hopefully I will be able to stay well enough to see them play again.”

Daniel’s father Mark said: “Pete invited Daniel to a concert in Bristol and dedicated a song to him. Another time, there was a fundraising show in London for the charity Teenage Kicks.

“Although Babyshambles were touring Europe and not booked to appear, they flew back for the concert and asked organisers if they could do a set which they dedicated to Daniel. Pete also gave him his mobile phone number and told Daniel to ring him if he ever needed anything.”
