Penelope Cruz will be presented with the Gotham Tribute Award at the annual 18th Gotham Awards.

The 34-year-old Spanish actress – who is currently receiving rave reviews for her role in Woody Allen’s new movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona and in Elegy alongside Sir Ben Kingsley – will receive the accolade at the prestigious New York ceremony on 2 December.

Michelle Byrd, executive director of Independent Feature Project, said: “Penelope’s body of work embodies what is exciting and vibrant about filmmaking today, in particular independent filmmaking.

“Her performances working with internationally acclaimed directors and her choice of roles are dynamic, vivacious and varied. IFP is especially pleased to salute her still very young career this year as she delivers knockout performances in two extremely different and winning films presently in cinemas.”

The awards ceremony recognise worthy independent films.
Past winners include Juno, Half Nelson and Junebug. The full list of Gotham Award nominees will be released on 20 October.
