The Oscar-winning actor was left with a broken arm, broken elbow and damage to his shoulder after the accident which occurred as he was driving his 1997 Nissan Maxima car in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi.

The car went off the shoulder of the road and flipped over “several times”, according to one onlooker.

Freeman, 71, was removed from the car wreck using the ‘jaws of life’, a hydraulic rescue tool, and was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

In a statement released yesterday afternoon (04.08.08), Freeman’s representative said: “He has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage but he is in good spirits.

“He is going to have surgery this afternoon or tomorrow (05.08.08) to correct the damage. He says he’ll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery.”

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sergeant Ben Williams confirmed Morgan had been driving a female passenger, who was now been identified as family friend Demaris Meyer, at the time of the accident.

Williams added: “Mr. Freeman was lucid and conscious after the crash. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point. When one person tried to take a photograph with a cell phone camera, Mr. Freeman joked, ‘No freebies, no freebies!'”

Freeman’s injuries are expected to take three to four months to heal.

The actor – who won an Academy Award in 2005 for his role in Million Dollar Baby – can currently be seen in new Batman movie The Dark Knight, in which he stars as Batman/Bruce Wayne’s business manager Lucius Fox.
