The 44-year-old actor stopped to sign autographs and speak to the crowds that had waited for up to four hours to catch a glimpse of their hero in Leicester Square.
He said: “These people are fantastic. They are the reason we are all here today – they got us the job!”
Johnny, who lived up to his heartthrob reputation in a black shirt and suit, also insisted his performance in the Tim Burton film would be his first and last musical venture.
He said: “It took me a while to get used to singing but because I had so much of it I had to get used to it. I’ve never done it before and I’ll never do it again!”
Johnny’s presence was too much for two fans who required paramedic help when they nearly fainted after meeting their idol.
Tim Burton bemused onlookers as he entered the cinema by baring his teeth and snapping his jaws together. Sweeney Todd also stars Tim’s long-term partner Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall.
