The iconic work, bought by the actor for USD4 million six years ago, made Hugh a fortune despite failing to attract the pre-sale estimated price of USD35 million when it went under the hammer at Christie’s auction house in New York on Tuesday (13.11.07).

The turquoise Liz – which is one of 13 images of the Cleopatra actress that Warhol made from a publicity photograph in 1963 – was sold to an anonymous bidder.

The portrait headed Christie’s Post War and Contemporary Art Sale at New York’s Rockefeller Centre.

The top seller at the auction was Mark Rothko’s 1995 Untitled (Red, Blue, Orange), which fetched a staggering USD34.2 million.

Warhol paid tribute to a number of other iconic women in the 60s with similar collections of different coloured portraits, including Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy.
