Suzanne Simonin is pressured into taking vows of chastity, obedience and poverty by her mother, who is full of shame that Suzanne is not her husband's child. Resigned to her grim fate, Suzanne enrols in a convent under the benevolent leadership of the Mother Superior, Madame de Moni. The older woman is sensitive to Suzanne's plight and helps the new arrival to settle in. Then Madame de Moni dies and a new Mother Superior, Sister Sainte-Christine, assumes control.
