King Amphitryon defeats his rival King Galenus and seizes all of his adversary’s land, supposedly in the name of his beautiful wife, Queen Alcmene. She prays for an end to the bloodshed. In a vision, Alcmeme learns that she will bear a child, the son of Zeus, who will save her people from ruin. Sure enough, the queen gives birth to a boy, who is named Alcides. Many years pass and Alcides falls in love with Hebe but their romance is thwarted by Alcides’s jealous brother, Iphicles.
