On Christmas Eve, German commander Horstmayer and his comrades are cheered by a concert from soldier and opera singer Nikolaus Sprink and his beloved Anna. Scottish officer Palmer accompanies Nikolaus from his nearby trench on bagpipes, to the bemusement of French lieutenant Audebert. The three sides agree to lay down their weapons for Christmas, playing football and burying the dead during the season of unexpected good will. However, the spectre of conflict looms over the trenches and invariably, hostilities must resume once the yuletide cheer has subsided.
