A 16th-century village is poised to be attacked after the harvest by bandits. The villagers ask experienced ronin Kambei Shimada to protect their community in exchange for food. The veteran swordsman and young protege Katsushiro recruit four further samurai - Gorobei, Heihachi, Kyuzo and Shichiroji - into the fold, in preparation for a battle to the death with the bandits. A mercurial rogue called Kikuchiyo pledges allegiance to the cause but needs to prove his worth.
