WHEN THE VIEW FROM THE SHARD opens to the public tomorrow, 1 February 2013, one of the biq questions for visitors will be; ‘Should we visit during the daytime or night-time?’ for the best experience.

It’s a big decision, as for many there will only be one visit up The Shard, either as they’re from out of town or can only afford to go up once. Luckily I’ve had the chance to visit first in glorious midday sunshine and then on a darkened early January evening.

Both options are attractive, the overall view in the daytime is more all-encompassing and further reaching, whereas at night the experience is more dramatic and magical.

If you are new to London, the daytime view is easier to comprehend, allowing you to pick out the capital’s highlights one by one; Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, St Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye, etc. At night, the local has the advantage; once you have found your feet with the London Bridge location and the lay of the River Thames, the city’s sights gently unfold into view.

Visiting with children? I would suggest the clearer view of daytime, which will no doubt fit in best with your touring habits in any event. On the other hand if you are planning a romantic date, night-time will always come out on top. I expect to hear of many proposals having emanated from the 72 floor viewing gallery over the coming years.

Conclusions:
– Daytime best for visitors to London, families and children.
– Night-time best for locals and lovers.
