Port of London Authority halves speed limit on river

THE PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY has come under fire from passengers and ferry firms alike after it halved the speed limit on the River Thames.

The drop, from 24 to 12 knots per hour applies to section of the River Thames from central London down to Greenwich. It is likely to hit journey times and frequency for commuters who use the many fast ferry services that have sprung up over the past few years.

"We are doing everything we can to ensure our services are not disrupted" said a spokesperson for one of the leading operators, Thames Clippers. But following the firm's UKP20million investment in new craft, some of which are capable of speeds up to 28 knots, the reduction will not be welcome.

The PLA's action follows concern that the increasing number of fast craft using the river poses a danger to marine safety.
