Bernard Berkman wrote an acclaimed novel once but has been hindered ever since by writer's block. He has almost given up the hope of ever penning a sequel, reclining into his life as a college professor with his wife Joan (Laura Linney) and two sons, 16-year-old Walt and 10-year-old Frank. When Bernard and Joan announce their separation, spurred on by her extra-marital affairs, the boys are snagged in a brutal tug of war between their two parents.
