Idealistic young CIA agent Alden Pyle travels to Vietnam to aid the South Vietnamese in their bitter struggle against the Communists. He meets Thomas Fowler, an English journalist who has been following the war. Fowler has a mistress called Phuong, and Pyle is immediately smitten, wooing her away from the journalist, whose world gradually disintegrates.
