Wren Petersen is profoundly aware that she is a disappointment to her father, founder of the not-for-profit organisation Medecins du Monde, who always wanted a son to carry on her legacy. When the old man dies, Wren dutifully carries on his work, marshalling forces on the ground where help is needed most. In 2003 Monrovia, she meets hunky Spanish surgeon Miguel Leon. As acts of shocking violence are perpetrated around them, Wren and Miguel wrestle with their attraction.
