Susan Carpenter relies on her gifted 11-year-old son Henry to manage the household finances and protect his weakling brother Peter, while she earns a meagre wage as a diner waitress. When Henry witnesses an unspeakable act in the neighbour's household, he employs his brilliant mind to plot the perfect murder of an abusive father. A brain tumour renders him incapable of carrying out the plan so Henry asks his mother and younger brother to realise his dream.
