Press agent Sidney Falco is struggling to break into the business. Working from home, he publicises himself by placing articles with influential New York columnist JJ Hunsecker, one of the city's most powerful journalists. Hunsecker asks Falco to break up a doomed romance between his sister Susan and a jazz musician called Steve Dallas. When Falco fails to meet his end of the bargain, Hunsecker stops publicising him in his column, and a war of words erupts between the two men.
