Beth is a dedicated conversationalist, who will stop at nothing to protect the precious fresh water mussels, which clutter up the riverbeds in the Highlands. Gangs from Glasgow regularly make the trip to the rivers in order to sell pearls from the mussels on the black market. Ritchie plies his roguish charm to trick her into revealing the locations of the mussels. In order to convince Beth of his dedication, Ritchie volunteers at her wildlife centre and gradually, he falls in love with Beth.
