On July 5, 1950, the lifeless, bullet-riddled body of Mafia leader Salvatore Giuliano is found in a courtyard. As mourners gather for his funeral, flashbacks trace Salvatore’s rise to power as a separationist guerrilla leader. When a Communist rally at Portella della Ginestra descends into senseless bloodshed, Italian authorities declare war on Salvatore and his acolytes including his second-in-command Gaspare Pisciotta.
