Ziyad Khan is the reigning sultan of 16th century Karabag. He has been on the throne for 23 years and his thoughts now turn to passing on the sultanate to his son Mahmut, who is very different in temperament. Ziyad Khan worries that the young man, who frequently rejects his father’s viewpoint, might not possess the steeliness or resolve to run an empire and those fears are realised when Mahmut rejects his destiny falls to pursue a passionate romance with Meryem, the daughter of a Christian monk.
