RENEE ZELLWEGER agreed to play Bridget Jones for a third time only after the film’s producers said that she wouldn’t have to fatten up.

“Renee had no reservations about saying yes once she found out she wouldn’t have to get fat,” a source told The Sun.

“She hated having to do that in the last two films.”

Zellweger’s “yes” was the final piece in the jigsaw to going ahead with Bridget Jones III. Both Oscar-winner Colin Firth (who plays Mark Darcy in the franchise) and Hugh Grant (Daniel Cleaver) are said to have already given the film the thumbs up.

One of those two is likely to be the father of Bridget’s unborn baby in the new film. That plot strand suggests that if Zellweger doesn’t fatten up, she’ll have to wear a pillow around her waist.

Meanwhile, work continues on a stage musical version of the Bridget Jones saga. The talk is still that a production could come to the West End stage in 2011. Sheridan Smith has been pencilled in as the star and some of the music is set to be written by Lily Allen.
