The young royals were keen to get money for the forgotten victims of Iraq and Afghanistan after seeing the soldiers’ plight when they both served as Army officers. So after calling on their rich associates, the princes have raised UKP850,000 in just 12 weeks.

A source said: “The welfare of wounded troops is close to William and Harry’s hearts because they’ve seen with their own eyes the guys suffering.”

Thousands of pounds more are expected to be donated tonight (07.05.08) at the Princes’ City Salute tribute to the armed forces in London, an event many of the city’s big earners have been invited to.

The money raised by the princes will be split between forces’ charities Help For Heroes and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Families Association (SSAFA).

Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 to aid men and women wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. It aims to raise at least UKP6 million to help build a swimming pool and gym at Surrey’s rehabilitation centre Headley Court.

In March, Harry returned from Afghanistan after spending ten weeks secretly fighting on the front line. One of the soldiers he flew home with is being treated at Headley Court.

Marine Ben McBean, 21, lost an arm and a leg when a mine exploded during a patrol. Last month, it was revealed William had made a secret trip to visit British troops in Afghanistan.
