Paul Burrell – who worked for the princess for 10 years until she was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997 – told the inquest into Diana’s death it would have been “impossible” to orchestrate the accident, and dismissed accusations her ex-husband Prince Charles was involved.

Speaking at the High Court today (15.01.08), he said: “It would have been impossible to set a fatal crash up. And as for Prince Charles, I just couldn’t see the father of her children murdering her.”

The crash also killed Diana’s lover Dodi Fayed, and his father Mohamed Al Fayed has always maintained the couple were murdered by the British establishment because they were set to announce their engagement and Diana was pregnant.

Burrell also said Queen Elizabeth, Diana’s former mother-in-law, told him after the princess’ death to “be careful” as there were “powers at work in this country”.

However, he denied this was evidence of a murder plot. He said: “I think it was a general ‘be careful’ warning over many issues.”

Burrell also claimed a mystery royal had warned him Diana’s intimate conversations might have been bugged but refused to give the name.

He wrote it on a piece of paper so only Coroner Lord Justice Scott Bakercould see. He then confirmed three members of the royal family who it wasn’t, the queen, her husband Prince Philip and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.
