Organised displays have become more and more popular over the years, with major London parks from Battersea Park in the south to Alexandra Park in the north hosting huge displays lasting an hour or more and attended by tens of thousands of people each.

Most of them cost, but some are free, provided by local councils, such as the one held Friday night on Clapham Common.

As well as the organised efforts, loads of brave gunpowder plotters host displays in their back gardens.

With so many people out of their homes, this time of the year is popular with the burgling fraternity. One recent estimate has it that 25 per cent of claims for burglary are made at or around the 5 November.

“Always lock your doors and all accessible windows,” is the sensible, if obvious, advice from the Home Office.
