Ellen Martin suffers an unthinkable twist of fate during her idyllic vacation and she begins investigating a fake insurance policy, which is a central part of her woes. Her enquiries lead to a high profile Panama City law firm founded by partners Jurgen Mossack and Ramon Fonseca. They have constructed a network of offshore accounts and shell companies to help their super wealthy clients cheat the financial system. Ellen is collateral damage of the questionable dealings.
