Ben Harper is involved in a robbery, in which two men are killed. Before he is apprehended and sentenced to hang for his crime, Ben hides his share of the loot and tells his only son John its location. Ben’s former cellmate, serial killer Reverend Harry Powell, is convinced the children hold the key to finding the money so he marries Ben’s widow then exerts pressure on the siblings to break their father’s confidence.
