All comedy is subjective and writer-directors Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s new potty-mouthed comedy subjects us to a heady conflation of two of their previous scripts, The Hangover and Bad Moms. Girls just wanna have fun and they intend to have plenty in Spa Weekend, which transplants booze-fuelled bad behaviour from the Las Vegas strip to a tranquil beachside wellness resort where cute baby goats perch atop participants of one yoga session…
Childhood friends Coco (Michelle Buteau), Jane (Leslie Mann) and Sophie (Anna Faris) have allowed their busy lives to weaken a sisterly bond stretching back decades. Hard-working lawyer and single mother Jane can’t find time in her busy parenting schedule to date a handsome prosecutor (Tim Ross) while Coco’s anger management issues are clouding her separation from husband Roger (Dominic Ona-Ariki) and how they co-parent daughters Ava (Aaliyah Nginyo) and Riley (Ali Basoka). Personal assistant Sophie may not have children but her needy boss Toby (Felix Williamson) acts like a toddler with his tantrums and endless demands on her precious time.
Coco books a spa weekend for the trio and they collectively agree not to tell the emotional trainwreck of the group, Mel (Isla Fisher), who is supposedly in France. The exhausted threesome arrive at the resort where “guru slash general manager” Shanti (Erika Heynatz) promises to melt away their stress. Mel gate-crashes the party and leaves destruction in her wake as she aggressively matchmakes Jane with Australian yoga instructor Kai (Adam Demos) and tries to repair Coco’s damaged relationship with Roger. “Have you seen this show: Friends?” squeals Mel, watching a rerun episode. “We used to be like that!”
Spa Weekend is a filthy-minded celebration of female friendships and empowerment, which lays on the heartfelt emotion with a trowel. There is no rest for us once hastily sketched characters begin their packed programme of meditation, massages and soothing mud baths. Mann and Demos are an attractive and instantly lovable screen pairing and the script provides no plausible obstacles to keep them apart. Buteau simmers and rages, and says a few things she will regret later, while Faris makes the most of the few scraps that screenwriters fling her way. Fisher is the human equivalent of a wrecking ball, careening through contrived scenes without a hint of self-awareness as she loudly berates Sophie’s boss down the phone or hijacks a golf cart to quickly ferry the quartet to their next treatment.
End credit outtakes showcase alternative one-liners that didn’t make the final cut including more barely controlled lunacy from Fisher. Actors make each other corpse by fluffing lines and hysterics spread like a contagion. Evidently, you had to be there.
