In the late 1950s, Alan Lomax embarked on an expedition through the rural south of America to gather recordings of traditional roots music in the company of Shirley Collins before she became famous as a folk singer. This documentary retraces the route of the so-called Southern Journey against the turbulent backdrop of the 2018 mid-term elections, discovering historical injustices that underpin the Black Lives Matter movement and a pervading sense of hope for the future.
