Aspiring artist Susan makes ends meet as a bar mitzvah photographer to pay the rent on the apartment in Manhattan's thrumming Upper West Side she shares with fledgling writer Anne Munroe. When Anne abruptly moves out to marry her boyfriend Martin, Susan is cast adrift and she searches for someone to provide her with an emotional anchor. Consequently, she develops a crush on Rabbi Aaron Gold and considers an affair with the married man.
