In 1970, Edward Gierek secures the position of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR). Supported by his wife Stanislawa, Gierek positions himself as a man of the people in the aftermath of crippling protests, which threatened to undermine Prime Minister Piotr Jaroszewicz. As the economic situation in Poland deteriorates, challenges to Gierek's authority become pronounced and he is interned.
