Film version of the hit Broadway stage musical, charting the roller-coaster fortunes of an all-girl singing trio called The Dreamettes - Effie, Deena and Lorell. Groomed by their manager Curtis Taylor Jr. as back-up singers for showman James "Thunder" Early, the girls are promoted to headline act and rechristened The Dreams. Tensions flare when Effie, the strongest singer, is demoted to the background to make way for the more photogenic Deena.
