Mortuary owner Mr Thomas is delighted to have assistant Sybil Chamberlain by his side. She loves poetry and is fastidious with a steady flow of clientele but Sybil frequently seeks refuge in wish-fulfilment fantasies to escape the real world including the deaths of her family in a car accident when she was 10. She begins to fixate on museum attendant Mark and imagines herself in a relationship with him even though he already has a partner. Sybil's delusion spirals out of control.
