Legendary bullfighter Antonio Villalta cuts a dashing figure in the ring and returns home to his doting wife, flamenco dancer Carmen. She dies during childbirth just as Antonio is paralysed by a bull named Lucifer. Their daughter, also called Carmen, is raised by her grandmother and also by her father’s scheming nurse, Encarna, who eventually becomes the girl’s stepmother. As Carmen grows, she witnesses firsthand Encarna’s wickedness and plots her escape.
