Tea merchant Jake Fleming and wife Kyra purchase a refurbished robot, or techno sapien, called Yang as a big brother for their adopted daughter Mika. The couple hope Yang will connect Mika to her heritage via a vast database of "Chinese fun facts". During a monthly dance-off against other families, Yang malfunctions and a technician sombrely confirms that the robot has suffered a critical core failure.
