The programme for the fifth annual Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House, the UK’s premiere outdoor film season, is announced in full today, running from Thursday 30 July to Saturday 8 August 2009.

Pedro Almodóvar will open the season on the big screen on Thursday 30 July introducing the UK premiere of his highly acclaimed Broken Embraces, starring Academy Award winner Pénélope Cruz, direct from the Cannes Film Festival. Broken Embraces is Almodóvar’s first film since his 2006 hit Volver, and marks the fourth collaboration between the director and actress, which began with Live Flesh.

In a new development, Somerset House and Film4 will team up with BAFTA to present Behind the Screen in the Somerset House Screening Room, bringing audiences an opportunity to meet face to face with key movie industry figures every evening, with family workshops and screenings each weekend of the season.

Highlights of Behind the Screen include Oscar winning editor Chris Dickens on Slumdog Millionaire, Nic Roeg in a rare interview, and Gurinder Chadha on Jerome Robbins’ 1961 classic West Side Story.

In a statement issued today, Somerset House Director, Gwyn Miles said: “In this, the fifth year of Film4 Summer Screen, we have confirmed our position as the UK’s premiere outdoor film season. We are delighted that, with the full support of our founding partners, Film4, we are able to expand the scope and range of the programme, as well as develop talks and workshops, particularly with family audiences in mind, with new partners, BAFTA.”

David Cox, Channel Editor, Film4, said: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with Somerset House for a fifth year, making Film4 Summer Screen one of our most successful encounters with live audiences. And following an extraordinary year of success, we are thrilled to be able to celebrate Film4’s Slumdog Millionaire in such an exciting and unique cinematic environment”.
