In the late 1990s, author JT LeRoy exploded into the popular culture. His first novel, Sarah, was accompanied by a few public appearances and a second novel, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, was adapted into a film. In 2005, an expose revealed that LeRoy didn’t exist and was the creation of a Brooklyn mother called Laura Albert. This documentary tries to make sense of this literary dupe by interviewing Albert about her past, sifting fact from fiction in the company of an unreliable narrator.
