ESTATE AGENT sale signs are to vanish from large areas of west London after the government agreed to let two councils ban the boards, often seen as ugly by residents/anyone with functioning eyes.

Neighbouring councils Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea applied and won permission from the government to bring in total bans on boards in 23 Conservation Areas, stretching from Olympia to Fulham.

The ban includes all signs from For Sale to To Let, Sold, Under Offer, Sold Subject to Contract, My Other House is a Porsche and whatever else they throw up.

“This is a victory for every resident who has had to put up with multiple, tatty, ugly and large signs that make roads look cluttered and shabby,” said Councillor Nicholas Botterill of Hammersmith & Fulham.

Kensington & Chelsea council are the first to bring in the new ban, on 27 September, with Hammersmith and Fulham close behind on 5 October.

But Hammersmith & Fulham have been at the board policing business before: earlier this year, we reported that they had started issuing fines for outsize signs.
