Jerry Brinson and his wife Jeanette move to 1960 Montana with their teenage son Joe. The boy looks up to his old man, who works on the golf course of a local country club and is extremely popular with members. An unfortunate incident results in Jerry losing his job and he seeks lower paid employment as a firefighter outside of town, leaving Jeanette and Joe to fend for themselves. In the absence of steady income, Jeanette takes on part-time work as a swimming instructor.
