Brilliant plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard is haunted by the death of his wife in a fire and he works night and day to develop an artificial skin that can withstand potentially fatal situations. Aided by housekeeper Marilia, Robert holds a young woman called Vera Cruz hostage in his home, using her as a human guinea for grafts of his experimental skin.
