Scenes From A Marriage is a portrait of extraordinary intimacy and a searchingly honest and moving love story. We follow Johan and Marianne from their seemingly perfect happy marriage through betrayal and loss, until they're warring contenders in a bitter divorce – and beyond.
Originally created for television by legendary auteur Ingmar Bergman, Scenes From A Marriage has acquired classic status, inspiring many other films and directors. This adaptation for the stage by Joanna Murray-Smith (whose play Honour was a success at the National Theatre and in the West End) is an emotionally powerful, visceral exploration of what happens when a marriage disintegrates.
Trevor Nunn returns to direct the play in the intimate setting of the St James Theatre, having originally directed it five years ago at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry. One of the UK’s leading theatre, film and television directors, he has been Artistic Director of the RSC and the National Theatre. His repertoire includes Cats and Les Misérables, for which he won Tony Awards, and the Olivier Award-winning Summerfolk, The Merchant of Venice, Troilus and Cressida and The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.
