The Britpop band have joined a line up including The Specials and New Order for the BT London Live concert on 12 August, which will follow the 2012 Games and the band promise it will surpass their 2009 reunion shows at the same venue.

The group posted on Facebook: “We’re rowing in … going for gold … grabbing the baton … for the high jump … No, hang on, is that right? Fact is, Blur have accepted the invite to headline the Olympics’ Closing Ceremony Celebration Concert in Hyde Park on 12th August.”

Bassist Alex James added to the NME: “I think the reunion shows we did in 2009 are the best we’ve ever done so this is exciting.”

Frontman Damon Albarn revealed he will be preparing for the gig with a new health regime which involves cutting out alcohol.

He explained: “Hopefully it won’t take quite as long to learn all the songs again this time as it did in 2009. For me personally it’s a very sober regime. I have to clean up my act completely. I can’t perform with the right intensity unless I do.”

Blur will also be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s BRIT Awards, which take place tonight (21.02.12) at the The O2.
