The first of the pimped-up trolleys is to be unveiled at the Cromwell Road branch of the store and, If successful in west London, more will be rolled out across the country.

Sainsbury’s has developed the new trolley with satellite broadcaster Sky, which wants to publicise its Sky Go sports news service.

“We strive to make our customers’ lives simpler, which is why we’re looking at these new trolleys,” said Brett Hart, Sainsbury’s trolley buyer.

Watching sport as you negotiate that tricky section near cold meats doesn’t sound like making life simpler, but, in case shoppers get too involved in Arsenal’s latest disaster, the trolleys have been fitted with sensors that warn of nearby obstacles.

“Being able to create a gadget that is practical yet innovative is often a challenge but I think with the trolley we’ve cracked it,” said Ian Burgess of Setwo Designs, the company behind the trolley.
