You don’t have to have an act – this isn’t Britian’s Got Talent – and there are no auditions.

All you have to do is register from 5pm today and then 2,400 lucky people will be chosen at random to make a show of themselves on the famous pedestal.

“I hope that everyone will apply,” said Angel of the North artist Antony Gormley, one of the faces of the project.

The actual event – known as the One and Other – doesn’t start until 6 July, from when the winners will get an hour each to strut their stuff to the delight of gawping tourists and hungry pigeons.

“The One and Other is an opportunity to turn yourself into a work of art and create something unprecedented and inimitable in this wonderful city of ours,” said London Mayor Boris Johnson.
