|New Home Secretary: I Was Jacqui Spliff|
- 'It was wrong,' says minister of cannabis revelations
BRITAIN'S Home Secretary Jacqui Smith today admitted using cannabis.
"I smoked cannabis when I was a student," she told viewers of Good Morning Britain. "But that was 25 years ago and I know it was the wrong thing to do."
The Home Secretary, given her job by Gordon Brown three weeks ago, said later that she had not taken any other illegal drugs.
Smith's revelations come at a time when the government is considering re-classifying cannabis as a Class B drug after four years in which it had been in the Class C category.
Though those years have seen a general decline in cannabis use, according to government figures, they have also seen an incease in strength of the drug and more evidence from medical researchers that it can harm users' mental health, especially that of teenage users.
Smith's openness could be used as a stick with which to beat Tory leader David Cameron, who has refused to talk of his drug use, despite plenty of rumours doing the rounds.
