|Another Russian Targeted for Assassination, Says The Times|
- Security forces save billionaire Berezovsky
A SECOND famous opponent of Russian leader Vladimir Putin was the subject of an assassination attempt in London, according to a report in The Times.
The Times report says that billionaire Boris Berezovsky was targeted as he arrived at the Hilton on Park Lane for a meeting, but his would-be murderer was taken in by security forces in an operation reported to have involved the Metropolitan Police, MI5 and MI6.
In the aftermath of the attempt on his life, Berezovsky fled from London. "I was informed by Scotland Yard that my life was in danger and they recommended that I leave the country," said the former Russian oligarch. "I left three weeks ago but have now returned."
Details of the plot are still sketchy given that both The Times and The Sun, which also carried the story, have only referred to anonymous sources for evidence and the Met has handed out a "we cannot make any comment at this stage" message.
It is also unclear whether the accused is in custody.
One reading of the Berezovsky story is that it has been planted in the press as part of the continuing diplomatic row between the UK and Russia, most recently over the killing of Alexander Litvinenko. Litvinenko and Berezovsky were firm friends and both have been fierce critics of the Russian regime.
