|Thames Wind Harnessed to Power London|
- Estuary turbine farms are the world’s largest
THE WORLD'S biggest wind turbine farms are to be built in the Thames Estuary and will provide a third of London's homes with energy.
The two wind-farms – one known as London Array and the other as Thanet - are to be sited between 7 and 14 miles off shore stretching between Margate and Clacton.
"Together, once built, they will mark a significant stride towards our renewables target," said Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling.
"It is a significant step forward in providing a greener and clean source of power."
In total, there will be 441 turbines in the two farms, which will be a few miles apart. Many of those turbines are planned to be contributing to London's energy requirements by 2008.
