|Total Clean-Up for Nelson’s Column|
- Preservation work ‘being done for generations to come’ says Mayor
THE FIRST full restoration in 20 years starts today on Nelson’s Column.
While the statue of the man himself is cleaned and checked every few years, the whole column is less vulnerable to the vagaries of London’s weather and pigeons, so gets away with a once-in-a-generation revamp, this time at the cost of nearly half a million pounds.
Among the refurbishments will be pigeon-proofing to parts of the column and statue and where’s there’s a pigeon-based event on Trafalgar Square, London’s mayor is never far away.
"Nelson's Column is an iconic landmark that is recognised around the world,” said mayor Ken Livingstone.
“This work is being done to ensure that the unique monument is maintained and preserved for generations to come."
