- Jeb Bush and Ken Livingstone step in as band gets marching orders over fears of bombs
A FLORIDA marching band has cancelled a trip to London on the instructions of US local government officials fearing a terrorist attack.
Lee County officials ruled a 140-strong group from Fort Myers school, in its area of control, should not join many other bands from around the world for next year’s New Year’s Day parade due to the risk of "trains blowing up."
The decision by Lee County’s Herb Wiseman has drawn an incredulous response from organisers, London‘s Mayor Ken Livingstone and even Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Bob Bone, leader of the New Year‘s parade, said:
"How can he [Wiseman] make a decision banning so many young people embarking on a cultural visit which they will remember for the rest of their lives without first bothering to find out the facts?"
Bone and Livingstone pointed out that London is among the safest large cities in the world and has a lower murder rate than Fort Myers, while Bush said that is the State Department said London was safe enough for visitors, that was good enough for him.
