|Sun Shines on Bus Stops
- First solar powered stop to be unveiled today
LONDON busses have already been given a boost in recent months with hundreds more vehicles added to routes across London. Now it is the turn of bus stops to get a revamp in the form of solar power.
Bus stop roofs will have solar panels fitted, plus batteries to store electricity for use in the hours of darkness. The energy generated by the panels will be used for bus stop lighting and for the dot-matrix indicators.
Today the first stop to be kitted out with the new power source, at Eaton Square in west London, will be unveiled, to be quickly followed by forty others across south London.
"Using solar power is a simple environmentally-friendly solution to a frequent complaint about the difficulty of reading timetables and feeling secure at night," said London Mayor Ken Livingstone.
