- Surprise success for Contact and Queen
CONTACT and We Will Rock You have announced extensions to their booking periods due to popular demand. Contact runs until September and We Will Rock You runs until June, with an additional matinee on the last Wednesday of every month.
These equally unique shows are both exceptions to the West End trend. The dance play Contact is a genre unto itself, combining dance and dialogue in a triple bill of text-based movement devised and choreographed by New York favourite Susan Stroman. We Will Rock You, on the other hand, coaxes a futuristic tale from the music of Queen, and is set in a bleak time when musicians writing and performing their music face extinction from computer-produced cyber stars.
The two shows' success promise change afoot in the West End. Contact is popularising the insular and scarcely seen world of dance, whilst the blockbusting We Will Rock You has defied critics sceptical of rock music on stage. The traditional fifties musicals and classic plays that have dominated theatreland could face competition.
